Some cars a whining noise...is caused by the Alternator, needs a capacitor adding to the wire from it...
Some vehicles have a Very small aerial, like a rubber duck, less than a foot long... Very Poor for AM
Either get a Longer one, from EBay (or a local car scrapyard) needs to be At Least 30 inches long
i.e. nearly a meter long...If you have engine ignition noise, and are OK doing techy bits...
Mount the Longer New aerial, at rear of car, but NOT Simply with an Extension Aerial lead, on its own,
Get a Rear Amplifier, from scrap dealer on EBAY, make sure its an AM FM one, Some are FM only
These are used in cars, that use a Rear aerial, Often using the heated rear window wires, as the aerial
Then add a single piece of wire, along next to the aerial extension lead, to power the amplifier box
Most car radios, have a switched output, to connect to, If not, connect to the Switched ignition +v
If you are trying to Listen At Home, on a transistor Portable radio, get a frame/loop aerial
to simply Put Next to the radio, to Increase The Signal...Such as the little Tecsun one
https://www.tecsun-radios.com/product/tecsun-an200-antenna/ (try Moonraker to buy one)
or much better still, Build yourself a Decent size Frame aerial, to put next to your radio
If you have Interference, from power supplies, in your house, or next door, try radio in your garden
or Loft/roof space, to find a spot, where Less interference, Mount the Frame aerial there
and connect it with TV or satellite Cable, back to where you want the radio to be
If Frame aerial mounted in Roof space/ Loft... aerial can be made on a big Cardboard Box easily
Then with a coil of wire NEAR the radio, connected between inner and outer of the TV coax,
(Tuning capacitor for Frame aerial, needs to be in sealed plastic box, if outside in the Rain etc)
I know what you mean Texas Pete, Too Many Candles on the Birthday Cake, at this end too !
