I worked at Invicta from 1984 to 1994 and I KNOW the audience of Caroline was never in the millions in the late 80s.
We found out (by commissioning research) that by 1986 the overwhelming majority of radio listening was on FM not MW. Those on MW only just picked up the scraps.
That why when the AM/FM splits came all ILR stations put their main service on FM.
The JICAR/RAJAR told us Caroline was not nicking anyone's audience. In 1988 we had 41% reach on FM.
The best Invicta Supergold (which was a fabulous AM station) got was 12% in the early nineties and believe me Johnny Lewis, Bob Mower, myself (Terry Purvis), Eamonn Kelly, Nigel Harris and all the others had to work our socks of to reach that level of audience. The few anoraks left on Caroline were not in the same class mate.
Just to set the record straight about my qualification to speak so about the subjects at hand - before getting to radio I was a trawlerman that also supplied the Mi Amigo and the Ross Revenge.
After ten years with Invicta I went to South Africa, became PD of a 40KW Hot Hits station with a 5 million audience, before doing the same role at Classic FM in Johannesburg. Finally I spent nine years teaching journalists from developing countries at the Dutch World Service in Hilversum, retiring in 2013.
Lets face it you were only in the business for five minutes - in truth you know sod all about radio, or ships.
