...in the 20s. She also moved the needle on liberating women from tightly cinched undergarments and corsets of past fashion into looser, more freeing clothes. Her Chanel jacket - more a cardigan than jacket - and little black dress make an appearance via Coco Chanel and were embraced by those who could. Actually, Chanel's LBD was her attempt to provide a simple dress that could be dressed up for formal occasions or down for every day wear by women of many classes and not just those who could pay for custom couture. Not a bad concept for 1926. I also think of Mariano Fortuny's simple, pleated, totally-unbound gowns. Granted, he started this fashion earlier, in the 1910s but his gowns were very much in style in the mid-20s. Talk about being liberated from bondage - this is a gown from about 1925 I saw at the Paris Fashion Museum which had a Fortuny exhibit at the time. So many of his pieces are absolutely timeless and I saw lines in his jackets that I see in current styles, mostly in the sewing patterns I buy from independent pattern makers. But I digress, which is easy to do with fashion discussion since it's so fluid. Great topic!
