Until she was caught by the wardrobe supervisor, and made to remove the belt! So, not everyone embraced the dropped waist silhouette, and these header picture dresses are a compromise between what was stylish and what made the girls look good. All of the women in the header picture have their breasts bound, by the way, but the curves still show. There was a certain resistance to the "boyish" look, and certainly not everyone would, or could, successfully wear it. Men weren't crazy about the look of flattened breasts, but they responded positively to the shortened skirts. In any event, women were ready for a change, and they embraced the change. Judy your instincts about the Tonner 1920s costumes are spot on! Those were pretty dresses, but not faithful to the actual lines of 1920s clothing. Brian nailed it when he said the really dramatic change was the lack of corsetting, because that was revolutionary. Here is my broken record protest, but please take it in the spirit of an observation, not a condemnation. In movies, and in doll clothing, the lines are not necessarily accurate because they need to sell the image, or the actual doll clothes, and accuracy sometimes looks so odd to the modern eye, that it goes by the wayside, and what we see is a 21st century designer's interpretation of the look, not the actual look and drape of the original clothing. The other thing is scale. Sometimes, there is not enough fabric to recreate the proper drape without excess bulk. Not everything can be scaled down to 1:4 size and look the same. The evolution of styles is endlessly fascinating to me, and the only thing that I really don't like is deconstruction, because all the fabulous dressmaking leading up to the 20th century is the culmination of years of artistry, and to show outside zippers and raggedy seams, just looks disrespectful to me. But that's me. You can take from modern or historical design what you admire, and ignore what you don't. There's a big world out there and a pretty vibrant design aesthetic, and it's all available to you. It's all in the eye of the beholder, Folks. Sorry for the late response, it's been a busy week, but a good one!If you got this far, thanks for your time!
