I subsequently built a similar TX using a BC108 and modulated with an output from my record player that went a few houses up the street.One of these mini txs was built into a fag packet that could be taken anywhere and used to jam Radio One at work in reply to the jamming of RNI feeding into a short length of wire in the office.
At the same time period of the kid at school's little transistor TX, a friend bought in a single valve VFO to the "Radio Repair Club" at school, connected it to an aerial from the physics lab and jammed out Radio One, again in response to the RNI jamming. We then set off down town to see how far Jimmy Young was being blotted out when the TX cut out. On our return we found an almost tearful physics master and a disgruntled licenced amateur, who later wrote in the school magazine that "some individuals hell were bent on breaking the Wireless Telegraphy Act!"
I later purchased my friends one valve VFO TX for £5, that we had now figured out how to modulate. (It was a pentode strapped at the grid to form a triode, the modulation inserted at the grid!) But it worked, though drifted as you'd expect, and went 15 or so miles with regular Sunday progs until the Gippo came round and put us off air following a tip off from a local amateur, who incidentally I became friendly with after getting my licence!
After I was nicked I gained in expertise and built better TXs, was nicked again, and then was more careful, but got my G8 in 1977 and full Class A in 1980. despite this I still pirated well into the 90s.
