Re: Proposal: Licensed Radio Ship off Felixstowe

The viability of this project is practically zero percent because the core premise contains a fatal legal contradiction. You cannot simultaneously operate a radio ship three miles off the coast of Felixstowe and remain within UK licensing regulations. Under the Territorial Sea Act, UK waters extend out to 12 nautical miles, meaning a ship anchored three miles out is entirely subject to British law. Ofcom does not grant terrestrial broadcast licences (AM, FM, or DAB) to vessels at sea. Under the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act, it is an explicit criminal offence to broadcast from a vessel within UK territorial waters, or for any UK citizen or business to sustain, advertise with, or supply such an operation. Consequently, any attempt to broadcast an actual over-the-air signal from that ship's mast would be shut down immediately by authorities, and the organizers would face criminal prosecution. The financial viability is equally non-existent. Keeping a vessel permanently moored at sea requires a massive first-year capital injection of around Άγ2.4 million, with recurring annual maritime operational costs close to Άγ1 million. These staggering costs are driven by the need for continuous 24/7 diesel generator fuel, specialized high-risk marine insurance, constant crew rotations, and heavy-duty deep-sea mooring systems capable of withstanding severe North Sea weather. Because the project is legally blocked from obtaining a broadcast licence, it can never generate the massive audience required to pull in advertising revenue. Even if it could broadcast, relying on local sponsorships from small businesses in the Felixstowe and Suffolk area would not cover even a fraction of the ship's fuel bill. You have made an offer on an Άγ800,000 asset for a concept that is a structural and financial impossibility.
