He'd come in late, be shaving in the studio, while a track was playing.....One morning while he was on air
doing breakfast, a wooden box of sound deadening material, fell off the ceiling above him, hit his head
and knocked the arm of the record, and the track playing, was "The Sound of Silence" or something similar
When I first visited KCBC, it was on air, but NO studios were built or finished, Just a Reel to Reel playing,
with a wire going up the stairs to the TX, The Original Frequency of 1530 was rubbish, in the Evenings
there were parts of Kettering where Reception was Clobbered by Vatican City radio, So Lester Cowling
kept complaining to Radio authority (before Ofcom) and they did nothing, So Lester Paid for them
to Stop the Night in a hotel, and they said "oh you do have a problem" So We managed to get 1584 instead
We wanted to put 1530 retune message out from a different site, but they said No, Got to come from same site,
But we said, it will Mix, They would not budge, So I erected a 50 foot Marconi "T" between a guyed pole and a tree
and me and Martin Spencer of Phoenix, devised a twin coil filter, to stop most of the Mixing... trouble was
it's Hi Q circulating current was quite high, so we had an Office Desk Fan running, to cool the filter down
1584 was a much better channel, only co chan. was BBC Nottingham I think
We still were running a Second TX on the same chan. at Corby, but this was just jamming ourselves, They tried
reducing the power of the Corby TX, but we found It worked best, with it turned OFF all together
They reluctantly agreed, to let us run 60W from Kettering, but later on, this Accidently/ on purpose ended up
around 200W (you could hear it, as far away as Luton, and half way to Birmingham!)
I remember One evening, Presenter said to me "can you smell Burning" I opened the back door, and ...
S**t the Factory Next door was on fire, We rang the Fire Brigade, and the BBC, We knew next door was
a Chemical Factory, and Fire brigade would kick us out of our building, So I Plugged the Radio Mic RX
into the desk, and Presenter did live updates on the fire, from the Car park...all good fun eh
