The VHF/UHF walkie talkie units are quite cheap and a lot of amateurs use them for 2 metres and 70 cm and they usually cover high band VHF segments also.

The FM broadcast band is far too congested now, so another approach is to go out of band and into the high band VHF segments that easily allow for mobile/portable transmissions away from the standard FM broadcast band.

Even UHF would be interesting..
