In the UK, It seems the Government Wanted Community Radio to Succeed, But Ofcom had other ideas, Restricting it, to protect the Big Boys
Even 20 years ago, when we were doing FM RSL's, We found out that a Commercial station, had complained to Ofcom,
that we were "Nicking their Listeners", and Ofcom came to check what power we were running
It's almost like an older person at Ofcom, had a large Valve Radio, Fall on them as a Child,
Or That, they Remember Lord Haw Haw from WW2. and saw radio as a threat, that needed to be restricted
Other Countries Allow Community Radio, with Reasonable Power, so why is the UK stuck in the past
With the SSDAB, Even the Government has put the 40% rule in law, to protect the DAB Big boys multiplexes
SSDAB has so many things stacked up against it,
Not just Ofcom, but things like, Cost of Equipment, 200 megs don't get into buildings well, Needs lots of power for small coverage
Using DAB plus for coding, means Loads of DAB sets out there, Cant receive it, Can't use horizontal polarisation, to get through woods
My Need several TX to cover a small area, increasing Ongoing costs, not just the set up costs, and No UK Builders of DAB TX
Some SSDAB multiplex awards, have been handed back, when they realise the business plan don't add up in the real world
thinking they may only break even after a few years, or worse still lose money long term, Especially in Rural areas
SSDAB should have been a major Success story in the UK, but so far it's a damp squib in many areas Why?
Sorry....Suppose ought to start this as a new SSDAB thread
