Dear radio friends and colleagues. What do you think..
As regular pirates in the 80's and 90's we would often put FM on 24/7 and ensure it was definitely on during bank holiday weekends. By the 2000's we started streaming on the internet and put shortwave (some did sw sooner) on to target international listeners. Then in more recent years we experimented with medium wave once again. Now in 2026 with the decimated AM band there is more room for pirates on Medium wave and shortwave but there are not enough listeners to justify the effort. FM is too risky nowadays unless you use low power and higher places to put the aerials so it can get out far enough. AM is fun but a lot of hassle and now trying to broadcast on DAB is very complicated but still possible. Is it even worth it?
So one off broadcasts are the way forward for special events like Christmas, Easter and Bank Holidays with rented airtime on the big high power legal shortwave and MW airtime carriers to ensure you get heard. FM is a bit of a no go now. DAB requires too much time to set up so I say stick with streaming online and save your time and money and just do the odd one off actual radio broadcast to keep the free radio flag flying and let people know your still out there.
Just my opinion, your thoughts?
