Hi Rod,
You're right, we have loads of stations in the 1611 kHz to 1701 kHz
extended AM Band.. 9kHz channel spacing
Transmitter Power 400 W pZ
Bandwidth 6 kHz
Quite a lot of them exceed the bandwidth and splatter occurs..
In Melbourne there was a station on either 1611, 1620 or 1629 kHz that used to relay London's Radio Jackie but has since changed their programming. It was great to listen to for that period..
Most of these stations either broadcast foreign language (Chinese, Indian, Arabic, Greek) and or religious style programming,, so little interest to me.. 1611 kHz used to be great when it was held by Anton V and used to be pop music and some sport.. but the licence elapsed and someone else has it now...
Nearly all of these stations have less than ideal antenna setups, usually they're located in industrial areas with vertical antennas of between 50 to 60 feet tall on top of warehouses and sheds with the warehouse/shed roof structure providing the ground plane.
1611 kHz is an exception as they share the antenna site of 855 kHz community radio

once again you may have to navigate about and zoom in to see the two masts
