A good source for searching is the on-line catalogue of the National Archives in Kew. (Link below). Simply type in the name of the builder or company (or whatever) and it should tell you where the archives are. For example: Cunard Archives are held in the National Museums Liverpool, whilst those for Cammell Laird are held by 'Wirral Archives'. Fairfields 'plans' are in Glasgow City Archives, and I've a feeling that a number of the other Clyde yards archives are in Glasgow University Archives.
Getting copies of plans may be problematical. Some years ago I 'needed' a 'general arrangement' plan of a steam loco built by one of the Scottish companies: their archives are in the University. We found it - but getting a copy out of them took time and money, and we weren't allowed to use it in the way we wanted.
Best of Luck!
