While some people will never move away from metal, I can print 8 Gabbiano corvettes at that quality for £2. Ships larger than destroyers are tricky because the build plate is too small so you have to cut them in half.
There are commercial 3D printers that can now print in metal. Finally, companies like Shapeways now have printers that can print in 4-6 colours so you can save painting at all - this should lend itself well to warships with their limited colour pallette.
