Interesting and I'll look forward to the next installment.
A couple of observations.
The cost to specification will fall, more bang for your buck as the say. I read somewhere recently that at today's prices the first colour TVs cost about £5000.
The cost of consumables will always remain significant. Printerink and car spare parts for example.
I spent most of my working life writing software to do various things. Now I've retired I don't want to do that ever again and am happy to buy the result from people like your son. I also built a kit car and did maintenance on my cars, again I would rather pay that spend hours on the cold charging brake pads or whatever.
I enjoy painting kits even though I'm not an expert by any means.
