It was quite an achievement, and a big pity that the Atlanta engineers couldn't figure it out. Thats why they migrated up to the 1500 kilocycles part of the band (as folks still called it in those days!) it had been calculated by them that it was impossible to get an antenna only 140 feet high working any lower without the special Mulalney antenna, which was still proprietary and supposedly a top secret military secret, I don't think it was patented until about 1968 or so.
We ran up a copy on NEC in the 1990s; a very clever idea.
