Using the lip line in todays header to raise a question...

Glamour shoos often show lipstick drawn outside the natural lip line to make the lips look more luscious. I remember reading in a biography of Max Factor that he claims to have created what was called the "longbow" upper lip, as opposed to the more usual "cupids bow." Katherine Hepburn often had longbow styled lipstick.

Madra has had both lipliner. Which do you prefer? Which says "Madra " to you? Or does it depend on the individual doll, her hair color and style and overall look? Do you have a favorite example of each lip style? Talk amongst yourselves...

would Bette and Joan be without having created such distinctive looks. And Lucy... and the list goes on. Lucy didn't do 'the smear' but the lips we know weren't hers either. I've seen them all using their natural lip lines and, while pretty gorgeous beautiful etc, they just weren't 'them'

I really think it's how successful they are in creating a persona and sticking to it. For me, Madra is just more Madra with her Davis Crawford upper lip smear.

Went away for decades but it's back again, in spades. Seems for creating character it either works or doesn't, but when it does it's lightning in a bottle.

Willow Madra to me pefectly captures that K. Hepburn look. Just wouldn't be the same ...

without that lip line, while Jonquil, with her cupids bow lips always makes me think of the Gabor sisters. I'm always surprised at how our Gene family dolls can capture the spirit of famous movie stars without even trying!

I agree, the natural shape of lips is pretty. Why obscure it?

The makeup artists did that swoop to Bette Davis as well.

As for Madra, she wore that swoop and then, she didn't. Integrity made Madra pretty, Up until then, she just looked intimidating. Then Jamieshow gave back the indentations in Madra's upper lip.

When Jamieshow did their East Meets West collection, the lip makeup was total fantasy.
