Glamour shoos often show lipstick drawn outside the natural lip line to make the lips look more luscious. I remember reading in a biography of Max Factor that he claims to have created what was called the "longbow" upper lip, as opposed to the more usual "cupids bow." Katherine Hepburn often had longbow styled lipstick.
