I have a mystery I'd like solved by the All-Knowing Geneophiles who know ... all!!

As the tag says, we were given these little hats at a convention in 2003 ... I'm guessing that was the year as that's what it says on the little hat tag.
The only thing we were told is that it was a surprise and if we brought it to the next convention, we'd understand.
Well, nope. Nothing appeared that I ever saw, and I don't think it was mentioned again.
Does anyone know what this was supposed to be? I assume it was a mistake at some level, but I came across it in Barbie clothes where I'd finally put it.
Please, solve the mystery for me!!

Kelly is correct -- This style of hat is from the 40's, and REALLT called a doll's hat!

There was no big mystery that I know of...

I was was totally surprised when I received the shipping container containing over 400 Ashton Drake gifts for convention and it was so small! I called AD to see if it was a mistake and they explained it was a "doll hat" worn by ladies in the 40's, meant to be a tie in with hats worn to the Kentucky Derby.

I don't remember anything being said about bringing it back the next year...certainly nothing was mentioned to me about it. Guess I was busy and missed that part!

If a suit or anything else to go with it was planned for the Hollywood convention the next year, I wasn't aware of it.

It seems to me though, that there was a story behind why it was small. That it had maybe something to do with the Kentucky Derby traditions, maybe?

If I recall, it came in a little box and with something else in writing that gave more explanation.

Those were the 2nd and 3rd conventions I missed. The fist being Alburqueque.

It's the 40s version of a fascinator. Also called a tilt hat.

I thought it was just a table gift from AD. It IS a Gene hat, not a Barbie hat. It’s a 1940 style called a “doll hat”. It perches forward on the head and the ribbons are tied in back, behind an updo. I’m trying to find a photo to show.

Well, the hat is tiny! A Barbie can sort of perch it on her head, but that's about it.

This would never fit a Gene. Can only sit up on a Barbie size head. The crown of the hat is tiny.
