I saw this last week on E-Bay as a BIN, and I leapt at it! However, it turns out it was not exactly what I though it was...but still pretty fabulous for that price. I conversed with Lori Kay (who seems to know all things Gene) to get some background on my newest prize.

For the 2005 convention, which everyone thought (at the time) was the end of the Gene line, Sandra went all out, as she usually does! As a special tribute for those collectors who had attended all 10 Gene conventions, she had a Gene doll made that came with a total of 3 fabulous fashions. I believe there were 20 sets made. Since there were fewer than 10 collectors there, the rest were sold to helpers and others.

Now, I have seen photos of this amazing set over the years, including in Anne Monday's fabulous Gene book. I have seen parts of it over the years on E-Bay, although it is a rare thing to come up for sale.

Of the three looks from this set, my favorite has always been the light blue cocktail dress with the golden underskirt. THIS is what I thought I was buying last week, along with the lace overcoat that went with the long sheath dress that came on the doll.

Turns out, what I got was either a factory sample of a prototype that differs from the final production for the convention. It is the light blue dress, but not drawn up slightly on one side with beading at the waist. Also, the two golden underskirts were not there. Instead, it is the blue dress with a blue crinoline covered by the darker blue lace overcoat. Apparently the coat was originally supposed to go with the cocktail dress.

Also, Sandra intended for the GOLD satin to be the color of the dress with the light blue as the lining, but the factory reversed that. I am guessing that time was not on Sandra's side to have them redone, so the dresses presented at convention were light blue with gold lining.

Mine arrived in pristine condition, still sewn onto the cardboard backing with the diamond stud earrings, hose, and matching shoes in plastic taped into the slots in the carboard like most A-D Gene fashions came.

I decided t stick with 2005 for a model, so this is the 2005 Haute Doll exclusive, Sparkling Angel, on an IT replacement body.

Then I decided to reverse the dress to see what it would look like with the dress being gold instead of blue. I added a magnetic brooch from Facets at the bustline. I must admit, I do like this look better, especially with the dark blue lace coat on top...Sandra KNEW the look she was going for!

While I did not get what I originally thought I was buying, I am very pleased with what I DID get...plus the wonderful history of this outfit via Lori.

    Enjoy...
