Upstage was a 1950 film drama directed by Ivy Jordan, written by Jane Champion and starring Gene Marshall, Madra Lord and Trent Osborne. The screenplay is loosely based on the life events of silent screen stars Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, and Colleen Moore. Marshall portrays actress Clara Laine, Who learns the craft of acting after a rich friend encourages famous director Klaus Shulsoen to take her on for a six month contract. Laine becomes one of the studio’s biggest stars, but a tragic accident cuts her acting career short. She turns to the work of production and directing, and becomes one of the most powerful women in Hollywood and one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
