Ronan was not the only person in this pastime who altered his opinions to suit the situation, but while he still had his wits he honed this to perfection.
The end, namely an advantage for him, justified any means. I recall so many times him telling me that my views ' were not clever '. This was his euphemism for saying that my views were correct, but not useful to arrive at whatever result he was pursuing at the time.
But he was charming and it was sad to see his bewilderment as his cleverness deserted him and all the ploys that once worked no longer did.
