I visited Harwich today and this station has a usable signal for around 8 to 10 miles which is very good for only 1 Watt of radiated power. The station uses a centre loaded vertical tubular antenna no more than about 15 feet long in total mounted right at the top of the Lightship next to the lantern. It has an excellent near perfect earth of course being on a ship in salt water. I can get anorak quality reception where I live around 18 miles inland from the LV18 and apparently some determined people can hear it across the north sea in the Netherlands some 80 miles away by sea path all the way. A very good project and another to keep the memory of offshore radio going.
