The engine-room ion the Mi MAigo n total was not very big. There was an area aft of the rear-mast, which ran under the wheelhouse and crew cabins - thats where the ships main engine was located. "The Lump", as sailors call it, was itself quite puny, a K-H unit developing only 190hp, so less than many cars. The engine on the Radio 270 ship, Ocean 7, was more powerful at 240hp and was run daily by the way and used for propulsion quite often. That last bit is key!
The Mi Mi Amigo engine was neglected, just left ignored and forlorn for many years, at times for want of parts, fuel, lube oil. It simply seized up, bit by bit. It was already underpowered and I believe was last run in 1975. Certainly by November of that year it was unable to move the ship at all. It was very cramped at that end of the engine room. I think there was a heating attachment to it, maybe for hot water?
Forward of the rear mast was an extension to the engine room, into the former hold, that contained TWO generators, tools, a large tank, air compressor and a hydrophor contraption, supposedly to make fresh water, a large intercooler and the all important generator switchboard. This is where various generators were located - the original Mercedes (see pictures of it in the Radio Caroline Bible), the Barth unit, snd some smaller units, such as the Henschel. This area had the all-important access - the hatch covers above could b e moved, but that took all day to do it as the winch hands been maintained and was seized solid; plus a man-access, which was a staircase onto the port side deck, just aft of the galley, which was the start of the main deckhouse.
I hope that helps understand the layout. I'll see if I can get Dick (Palmer) to discuss these in more detail and get back to you.
(And for today's lesson in Maritime terminology: The "chimneys" were indeed the EXHAUST for the generators.)
