Re: From another sourse
It's customary to install transmitters inside an ir-conditioned air-tight enclosure, especially when in a damp atmosphere. This is NOTHING to do with temperature regulation, it's to keep the corrosive salts out of the air. It's vital at high voltages where you can get arcs leap[ing about all over, but also important at lower voltages found around the PA modules in a solid state unit, like the Harris DX units. Corrosion attacks the dissimilar metals first, and the damage can't be rectified simply by soldering across the connections. Too many of them for one thing and in hard-to-rech places too. Disheartening to see the way off beam comments - The unit was not a "pig in a poke" but it was simply uncared for at some point in inits career and not stored very well. It's also now approaching 30 years olden has had a hard life. Most transmitters used in offshore radio don't make it to that age without needing quite major surgery. It is basically a DX 50 by the way, and there are quite a lot out there still. And its bigger brothers too!
