What ? do you consider gives good AM its signature "sound"?

With a previous hat on, I used to repair Musicians Valve (tube) guitar Amps,
I used to ask them, Why do they like their old valve amps?

typical comments were...
Its the "warm" sound.... I can't get the same sound from transistor amps etc.

Interested in your comments on AM sound
(It don't have to be Mono, lots of early tracks good in stereo)
