If your serious about things, you need a proper Mod Processor In between them...If you can't Afford, something like say..
a Basic Broadcast W/house DSPX or Similar, then a Newer type Behringer unit (with Plastic case, not the Old metal ones that clap out) will help
With No Processor in circuit, you will get the classic Loud Mic.(with Digital Distortion) and quiet music
making you turn the Volume up and down all the while, most annoying to listen to
CRL Kit used on the Laser ship, consisted of several 19" rack units cascaded, whereas the Orban Optimod 9100 was 'all in one box'
The main "secret" of the 9100's sound, is it's Wide range AGC, it's Equaliser stage, and it has a SIX band Leveler
We used to have one at KCBC in Kettering long ago, (remember Howard Rose (Jay Jackson)..Marvelous Lad.... and Robbie Owen)
The Absolute minimum really, is a Two band unit, like an old FM Optimod, that's had it's capacitor's and Noisy OP amps changed
There are lots of good digital units about, but look for a Four Band one, if you can afford it
But Don't over do the compression, Real music has gaps and quiet bits, don't squash the life out of it, and make it a "Wall of Sound"
A Multiband Leveler is Essential if you play a lot of 60's tracks, that are "a bit Lacking" in balance, when they were recorded
A decent Multiband will remix the poor recordings, and make them sound better, especially if it can use "Look Ahead" idea
where the Audio is digitally delayed, so that sudden peaks are cut back Before they distort
Hi-Fi Purists would have kittens,(plop plop, Meow) if they knew what broadcast Radio does to Music
But This is Not Hi-Fi, We just want it to sound good !
