Bases and yards are quite different, at least in the U S. Yards normally have the same narrowish piers, but you also do find larger areas, which typically are land mass extensions that have docking facilities. That is where you will find cranes, and lots and lots of building, mostly shops.
Again Google map the old New York (Brooklyn) Navy Yard. Although it is no longer active the shore configuration is pretty much as it was back in the day.
The only crane I have ever seen on a pier in a USN Yard was the hammerhead crane at the old Philly Yard. There are probably more, but I have never seen them.
Never confuse a USN Naval Operating Base (NOB) with a yard for diorama purposes. They are quite different in how they are configured
One final thought. The Triang and Hansa quay sections are much too high out of the water to be used in depicting a US base or yard. Probably two or three times too high from the water up to the surface of the pier.
