There were articles in the 2015 & 2016 editions of Warship on the abbreviations used by various navies.

As has been said: SMS - Seiner Majestät Schiff was used up until the end of the German Empire. After that nothing seems (officially) to have been used until 1956 when FGS (Federal German Ship - in English) was introduced, as much for NATO purposes as anything.
