I did some quick google Research as I was not familiar with the term. Not too surprising as I never served. However in German society or Wikipedia no ship has a prefix. Which made me curious.
So, it turns out that FGS is 'Federal German Ship' and is not an official part of the ship name, but rather an abbreviation that is commonly used within NATO.
