Terry, thanks for your reply. I knew the dedicated ASW choppers carried the requisite gear to hunt so I wondered how useful a SAR one would be without it. Re the equalisation I was talking to some ex USN pilots about whether they had to dump any unused ordnance before they could land as I'd heard this was the case. Being Viet Nam era pilots they said they would land at Da Nang to offload. I seem to remember reading that now, with only 3 arresters, they can land with the unexpended weapons rather than drop them off either in the sea or at a land base. I've no idea why having one less wire makes that possible. Maybe I'm confusing things. Looking properly I can see the other torpedo as it hovers above the deck. Was it just a trial of the rescue chopper carrying weapons, or perhaps training ?
