Humankind's capacity to delude themselves and others is strong.
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. (Matt 24: 4-5)
At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. (Matt 24: 10-11)
At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time. (Matt 24: 23-25)
There's no shortage of persons claiming to be "divinely inspired" whose actions have turned out to be nefarious. Thus a person's subjective claim of "divine inspiration" is not enough. Fortunately God did not leave humankind bereft of certainty regarding the Truth of Faith and Morals. Yes the GREATEST Commandments are to LOVE God and neighbour, but there are still many questions and uncertainties regarding what constitutes LOVE. The teaching of the Church really only makes explicit the nature of LOVE which is perfectly realised in The Word made flesh. The Law of Moses wasn't abolished in Christ, it was FULFILLED (Matt 5:17).
It's a false dichotomy to posit Church teaching against The Word made flesh. The former expresses the nature of the latter and ensures we are not deceived, by ourselves or others.
