I would teach a visual, like maybe pix: "jumping" "sleeping" "eating" etc, and teach him what they mean--then play with Potato Head or other figurines, and point to the visual when you ask "what are they doing?" You could "feed" him the line, "Potato Head is ___" and point to the picture that matches the action, for him to fill in the word. Then fade support. Good luck. Also, look up the Cues-Pause-Point technique for reducing echoic speech.
