I have worked in birth-3 for nearly 20 years. I absolutely love it but it is not for everyone. In the state I live, early intervention is routines based and family coaching. We do not bring toy bags into the home. Instead, we use family routines and materials to teach the caregivers how to work on communication. The cons are that families have complicated lives and your agenda is not always a priority for them. You are in their space and it is not always pristine. You are with 2 year olds who share their germs! Scheduling can be a challenge because of driving but scheduling is a challenge in a school setting too. I think the biggest con is that you are on your own, without the support of colleagues in the setting.
The pros are working with families to change their children's lives with the gift of communication. You develop close relationships with families and empower parents to advocate for their child. You witness a "first word."
