Commitment is healthiest when it is not without doubt but in spite of doubt.
~ Rollo May
Over many years I have learned, and am learning every day, that my doubts evidence my free choice to continue following the guidance of the divine mystery inspiring me from within my conscious awareness. In other words our faith in Our Father's Word encourages us to overcome our hesitancy, until tomorrow when we begin again to follow the counselling of our interior life.
It's always apparent to the committed person of faith in God that they will ponder in depth over the requests that The Father makes to us, that we may prove through our actions that our faithfulness remains steadfast...despite our many doubts. Our Father expects us to discuss His requests with Him, that He may explain in depth of detail the reasons for asking us to do all that He asks of us. That dialogue is an integral reality in our daily conversations with Our Father, learning that He understands why we doubt His presence in our life sufficiently to provide us with the reason for His appeal to continue trusting Him...despite our doubts.
When Doubting Thomas spoke out loudly that he wouldn’t believe unless he felt The Christ's wounds, he didn’t want faith; he wanted absolute certainty. Thomas the Apostle was saying, “I will believe it when you prove it to me.”
Faith is not certainty in the face of our many fears leading us to question our beliefs.
It is belief despite our questions and misgivings.
It is trust despite our doubts.
The beginning of wisdom is found in doubting;
by doubting we come to the question,
and by seeking we may come upon the truth.
~ Peter Abelard
