I quote:
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want
end quote
John Henry Newman's poem Pillar of the Cloud (1) includes the familiar hymn Lead kindly light (2) another example illustrating the protecting role of Our Father extending safety, and wise instruction for all His children who elect to listen too, and follow His loving advice. Shepherds care for, and protect those who are in their safe charge. Sheep have a well established habit following their shepherd, understanding that they are well looked after by a familiar presence attending to their every need.
"Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the desert. By day the pillar of cloud did not cease to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take."~ Nehemiah 9:19
Many of us, if not most of us lose our way when exploring the avenues of life's journey, with the awareness that no matter how difficult our choices we are being shepherded by The One who out of His great love for us, asks us to return to His loving care leading us into safe pasture.
(1) According to the Book of Exodus, a pillar of cloud guided the Israelites by day during their journey out of Egypt. The pillar of cloud is traditionally paired with the manifestation of the divine presence by night as the pillar of fire, furnishing light. This was so Moses and The Israelites "could travel by day or night."
