To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion ~ Robert Burns
Way, way back when an altar server I can recall a particular wise scriptural verse that resonated with me, sufficient to understand that our mirror image can delude us in believing that we are, what we appear to be.
To see through a glass (a mirror image) darkly is to experience an obscure, or imperfect understanding of reality. These words are drawn from the writings of Paul of Tarsus; teaching us that we do not now see clearly, but at the end of our journey through time, we will do so.
“Mirrors should think longer before they reflect.” ― Jean Cocteau
Robert Burns wisely reminds his reading audience that were we to live in the truth of who we are, we would live a life in freedom of care from that which incarcerates us into its cell of fear, of being recognised for the person we understand needs to change, or be transformed into the person liberated from our anxieties.
Fear filled anxieties propels millions, upon millions of people to rely on anti depressant medication to shield them from facing the truth; rather than resolve to liberate themselves from their life fraught with fear of that lying in wait around every corner.
Perception is that awareness that our responses are driven by how we prefer to see life, rather than letting life show us how to live in freedom from our self constructed fear of living in the truth.
The Saviour invites us to surrender our pretensions that we think we know it all, therefore can manage well enough on our own.
The wisest, of the wise learns on their journey along the road of bitter experience, that life's obstacles are also sign posts inviting us to grasp The Saviour's hand setting us free.
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free ~ John 8:32
