Sporting and other organisations pay him big bucks to play well and be a representative of their organisations according to contracts he signed. If he thought those signatures would conflict with his right to free speech, it's pretty simple, he shouldn't have signed them.
Speaking your truth is often costly no matter what your views are, but not many of us expect to be paid millions to be part of an organisations 'branding'. That comes with conditions. He knew the conditions; he broke them. Simple really.
As for 'cost him his livelihood', are you serious? The guy's a multi-millionaire. He'll just go overseas.
