Well, Pete, Vatican translations from Italian, to English have often created embarrassing moments leading to clarifications.
No one, least of all, Pope Francis is suggesting that the poor, are poor the result of turning their backs on God.
Poverty is often demonstrated among the wealthy visibly lost in their material world devoid of love, and understanding for many lacking even the basics such as shelter, clothing, and food.
Charles Dickens' character, Ebenezer Scrooge's bank account was very fat, despite Scrooge demonstrating material poverty when ignoring the needs of his poorly paid employees, and their families. Following Scrooge's night visitations he turned over a new leaf, learning that sharing his wealth with the needy transformed him into a happier human person, filled with joy that he was able to assist those, as if by accident brought into his life to provide help.
