The Emmaus Road story illustrates the delayed response of two of Jesus' apostles to His presence at their side fleeing from Jerusalem terrorised that they would also face execution.
Much later on their journey towards Emmaus the two apostles suddenly realised that their travelling companion was Jesus comforting them during their moments of distress.
I have no doubt that Cleopas and his travelling companion struggled to reconcile the events they witnessed with the identity of the One they loved and thought they had lost forever.
Holy Scripture is filled with stories illustrating journeys of self discovery with Jesus' apostles, Abraham, and Moses demonstrating that Our Father shepherds us through life when we make the conscious decision to embrace His love of us.
