Is she holding a small rod under that portion of the skirt? It’s perfectly straight and extends off her hand but I can’t see it. I just find it a really interesting style trick for this photo.

You guessed it! She's holding a stick under the extended skirt hem.

I love the lines of the 30s. You'd be unlikely to find sheer, short sleeves on an evening gown today. but look how graceful the whole silhouette becomes.

I wonder if there are any spangled silk organzas? That's what I think the overskirt is made of.
