Let’s post favorite Halloween memories! I’ll start>>

Unlike today’s Trick R Trunk or organized treat giving my childhood was a free for all! My brother and I planned our costumes, they were never fancy but we did them ourselves with minimal help from mom. We were forced to eat dinner first! Then we were unleashed upon our small town to run amok for hours. We used a pillow case for our treat bag. Meeting up with other kids, getting the scoop on who was handing out the good stuff. It was never limited to just our immediate blocks, we roamed everywhere. Halloween wasn’t done until our pillow cases were so full and heavy they were dragging on the ground lol. Back home there was no Switch Witch, no having to pick a dozen pieces to keep. We kept it ALL!! Trading back and forth went on for a few days, dad would demand the Dad Tax (almost always a mini Krackle bar, that one hurt to give up). Then the challenge was to see which of us, my brother or me, could make their candy stash last the longest. We were always allowed to keep it in our rooms, the game meant we’d pace it out. There is little more satisfying in life then taunting your sibling with the last piece. Eaten slowly and always in full view of them.

Scarecrow: A strange man with an axe and a can of lube. I’ll ask if he wants to join us?

My most memorable was when a doctor had to make a house call for me! I was ill.

Woody Woodpecker costume. I visited a large house set back from
the street and pretty formidable at least on sight. Once I knocked
on the door a group of senior citizens, all family members, welcomed
me with open arms. No one had ever stopped by for trick or treat!
They had a pecan orchard, so I got a bag of those and all the lemon
drops I wanted from their coffee table.
They were so happy to see me!

out having fun in costumes and sharing fun and laughter... Halloween was not a thing in New Zealand when I was a child ...it is starting up a bit now

My younger brother and I would start cutting up the Sunday Funnies in early September….

We would both have a brown paper grocery bag full of confetti. The we would shell field corn into the confetti bag. After all you needed to hit those windows and doors and make noise. We had Collegeville brand costumes as little kids and then homemade costumes as we got older. When our treat bags got heavy, we would stop at home and let Dad inspect our goodies, which was his favorite job on Halloween. I wonder why???
There were dozens of kids roaming the neighborhood. We got to keep our treats after Dad’s inspection. He ate most of the Chunky bars. The candy would last weeks. Mom always put a few in our lunch bags.
Really miss those days with my brother.

with her friends and her friends kids and we used our house as party headquarters and once we finished our 'block' we got in the car her friend and her drove us kids to the next block with our pillowcases. Our costumes were homemade by her and her friends, one year I was dressed as a bride and the kid I grew up with was the groom and his kid sister was our bridesmaid we were about 5 years old, I think she was three ! I remember it was 1970 because I was 5 and we had tons of candy that year and back to the house for chips and more candy than we could possibly eat, while our 2 moms sorted it all. Those were fun times. I couldn't possibly save the candy because my mom ate most of it before I could! LOL...

I remember going out trick or treating with my dad and grandpa. My cousin would join us. Mom >>

usually made our costumes. I distinctly remember being a clown , Raggedy Ann and one year I went as the tortoise and the hare. I was the tortoise and my real rabbit was the hare! After getting our haul we’d dump our bags and begin trading candy. I loved butterfingers the most. My sister hated chocolate, can you believe that?! So I got some pretty sweet trades!

Mom would buy the candy early, and it would be separated by brand in a large wooden bowl, that she also used to bake bread. Everyone snuck out to the washing machine lol and by Halloween not much was left. She’d run out and get more just in time. I always thought it was her way to trick or treat all of us.

Her and dad, being older would greet each child and comment on the costumes, like grandparents and often took pictures. It was always a great evening.

we would have store bought costumes. At around 9 I started to put my own costumes together. Over the next few years I was Groucho Marx, a Bum, Dracula and Gangster. When I turned 11 my parents let me take my sister out with a group of friends. We would go for hours and have huge pillow cases of candy. I remember there was the legendary house that gave out cans of soda!
When we got home we would sort out our candy and I would give my Dad all the candy I didn't want/like (usually hard candies LOL).
After I turned 14 my parents wouldn't let me go out in costume any more so I would take my sister and still get candy!!! LOL

I can't be around the candy as I eat it. Buy early and buy often. ( I used to buy it in September!) I even tried to get yucky candy but I liked to eat that too. lol So I do not hand out candy anymore.

My favorite Halloween memory is dumping the candy on the living room floor at the end of trick or treating, and sorting it.

I think we started trick or treating at at 6 P.M. and were all done by 8 P.M.

I loved reading your post. Great idea about the game/taunting! How much did you eat each day?

My brother once had his last piece in June. It was stale. Served him right lol!

If we did finish ours by Christmas it went in the trash!
