The designer Mary McFadden (most active in the 1970s and 80s) used heat setting and metal rollers to try and imitate the pleated fabric of Mario Fortuny, but he worked in silk, and she used polyester. Some interesting stuff resulted, but people would insist on ironing her fabrics, and the carefuly produced texture disappeared under the heat of the iron, or sometimes, the fabrics just melted. Kind of unintentionally funny results, actually. But In give her credit for trying. If you find hammered satin nowadays, it is most likely synthetic.
