My Dad made us kids up little notebooks titled, "The Daddy National Bank". We made deposits and withdrawals. I was so little that I could barely spell. As time went on he paid me to mow the lawn with the push mower. I liked to mow letters and designs in the lawn until eventually mowing it all. I was paid to shine his shoes, clean his pilot's hat and go over his flight suitcase checklist. As I got older (all taller) he taught me how to wash and wax our cars by sections. I was never tall enough to reach the top of our Volkswagem Microbus - even with a ladder, so I was exempt from that part. When I asked for anything he always told me I could work for the money. We were only given school clothes once a year, and they were sparce and not fashionable. I also baby sat for neighbor's kids!
I had a meager allowance for standard chores, so was able to have a little more cash with my extra work at home and on rental properties pulling weeds and painting.
I wash my own car to this day, thinking of him as I cover it section by section..
Here's a pic of me washing our Bug, age 13, at my Grandma's house in Santa Monica, CA. I'm sure I waxed it also, for the big money!
