Originally, giving the "cold shoulder" meant turning away upon recognizing someone, in other words, a snub.

The ready to wear industry took charge of the phrase in the 1980s and applied it to any garment with a cut out at the shoulder. Now, some people think of that as the phrase's only meaning.

Today's header picture of the 'cold shoulder' is demure, but still sexy. That shoulder cut out solves a problem for many women, and I think, as with animal prints, it is destined to periodically reappear in fashion.
