A red rose on the table signifies the blood that was shed and is a reminder that some families and friends still have faith that their missing service member will return. The yellow candle and yellow ribbon symbolize the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those still deployed and those missing and yet accounted for.
A slice of lemon on the plate recalls the bitter fate of the missing and salt symbolizes the tears that have been shed. An inverted glass is a reminder that the missing and fallen can no longer partake.
The Bible symbolizes faith and the pledge to defend "one nation under God."
