“Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Sir Winston Churchill
Learning is sometimes self-motivated, but more often subjects must be taught. Things such as geography and history have fallen by the wayside along with cursive writing. There is hope, though, as cursive is making a comeback. A clear awareness of where you are and how you got there is a necessity to progress. Instead, the past steps forward along with the more recent steps seem to be regressing. Sadly, the very things we fought so hard for are endangered.
All my life I’ve questioned why people are quick to believe a lie but fight accepting a truth. The most valuable course I taught was one in communications, which included how to analyze information to tell the difference. The course was eliminated as “unnecessary.” Recently, I saw a news item about high school students who have learned and are now teaching others those skills. Yet another sign of hope.
There needs to be a valid emphasis that there is much to be learned, both from the past and for the future.
