Joe, the best place to start is by taking the practice test at www.qrz.com and feel free to ask me questions. At arrl.org you can order great study guides as well as question and answer books. The questions and answers on qrz are the very same as those that are in the actual question pool. I would recommend at least studying for the technician and general exams. There are several Christian groups on HF that I'm sure you would enjoy.
If you actually pursue this Joe, I will be happy to give you my number so you can ask questions directly or to just chew the fat. Equipment can be had very affordably these days unless you're eccentric in your requirements, lol.
