In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the ship "Hosanna", registered in Zeebrugge Z592, served as a supply ship for the Mi-Amigo radio station.
On the evening of January 14, 1980, the "Hosanna" was last spotted sailing from Douvres to its anchorage at the time, Scheveningen. It has never been heard of again, nor have the five people on board: Pieter Guijt, 33 years old, his nephew Pietje, 14 years old, the ship's master Germain Ackx, his son Piet Ackx, and the sailor Hector Snauwaert.
A thick fog was prevailing that night and, according to the captain of Zeebrugge, the ship was in a dangerous area of the Channel.
During the search, a empty lifeboat was spotted near a oil tanker. However, no information was given about any damage to the tanker or a collision.
The police in La Haye, in charge of the investigation, also admitted to having suspicions at the outset. Indeed, the Belgian Germain Ackx was well known to the police for arms trafficking, smuggling, and the illegal supply of material to pirate radios (including the Mi-Amigo radio station, on board of which Ackx also stole objects).
Moreover, the circumstances of the departure of the Plymouth ship appeared suspicious to the English police. The ship suddenly appeared under another flag and with a new registration number, and was sold to the former owner of "Radio Caroline" before its departure; moreover, it was well insured for four hundred thousand pounds.
The truth has just come to light after 46 years. The wreck of the "Hosanna" Z-592, the missing Belgian merchant ship, was discovered off the English coast.
The damage to the hull confirms the presence of a notable bulge and a crack. The merchant ship was probably hit in the dense fog, "either by a tanker or by another large cargo ship".
Given the state of the wreck, which has been filled with sand and rests at 55 meters, it is too dangerous to go any further into the search.
