Welcome to LASER!
The original LASER558 was an American-based pirate radio station which broadcast from International Waters aboard the M.V. Communicator in the North Sea during the mid-1980s, just a mile away from Radio Caroline. After initial testing, she began broadcasting on 24th May 1984 and attracted a huge audience due to the music format and the amount of music played each hour. LASER558 had music at its heart and became an instant hit for listeners who wanted more music and less talk. The fact that LASER558 was dubbed a ‘pirate’ radio station made her all the more attractive. Due to its success, LASER558 became the target of a campaign by the Department of Trade and Industry, which tried to shut it down. The DTI claimed that LASER558 ‘stole’ 10 million listeners from the BBC and commercial radio stations, such was its attraction. It was heard both across the capital and throughout the UK. LASER’s music format changed how UK stations operated as more and more people started listening to the ‘pirates’. Although its life was short, LASER558 paved a path that is still followed today.

After LASER558 came the short-lived LASER Hot Hits on the same ship. Again, a great format with the hopes and dreams to continue where LASER558 left off.

Forty years later, LASER558 is now licensed by OFCOM and follows the same music format that made it such a success all those years ago. Six of the original DJs have now re-joined LASER558, broadcasting on DAB radio, online, and on smart devices every day to a new audience, making it one of the fastest-growing independently-owned commercial radio stations in the UK. Just like the original station, the music is NEVER more than a minute away!
