The 150 kW medium wave transmitter, an RCA BTA-150, was later put into operation at the VoA broadcasting station in Ismaning, coupled with an identical transmitter with an output power of 300 kW at 1196 kHz. The power amplifier tubes were air-cooled, with large coolers secured to the outside with a kind of chicken wire. At sub-zero temperatures, this wire had a habit of allowing the openings to become covered with hoarfrost, which impeded cooling, causing the transmitter to fail, usually in the middle of the night.
